| Can your business survive without you |
Friday 17 July 2009 two days after I celebrated my birthday I walked into the office of my Lawyer to have a look, finalize and sign my last Will and testament. I needed to make sure that all that I have spent my life working for would not fall in the wrong hands and that my two daughters would be well taken care of. I went back to my office and called my two senior heads of department, I didn’t want to show them how frightened I was about the experience I was to undergo the following morning, even when I have had two other more major operations before. I told my senior staff that I expected them to be in control of the business during my absence and that I would have my cell phone either switched off or on silent and that I would not answer any calls as I would need all the time to rest and recuperate. I told them I knew that they were competent and that I trusted them enough to know that they would make decisions that would be in the best interest of the organization. I also told them to make decisions even if they were wrong ones and that it was the only way they would learn to manage the business.
Saturday morning 18 July 2009 I was in hospital ready for my procedure. I remember the Doctor asking me if I was nervous and I answered him that I just wanted to get over and done with it, in my mind I said ‘Doc you have no idea how nervous I am’. As they wheeled me into the operating theater I said my prayer and saw the faces of my daughters and I knew I needed to get out of hospital alive, my daughters still needed me, before I could have any further thoughts I was knocked out, the next time I started feeling something, I was in the recovery room and I could hear the nurse faintly saying ‘she is awake, we will take her to the ward shortly’ at that moment I knew that I was still alive.
The last thing that was on my mind was my work and office or whether everything was okay, I was more than confident that my staff had everything under control. I could go home and rest without worrying about my work; I could put my phone on silent and rest knowing that I had competent staff to handle any work or challenge that came your way.
Can you say the same thing about your staff?, whether you are the business owner, manager, supervisor or head of department. How much time have to set aside each day to delegate and mentor your staff or are you holding on to all the work for fear that your staff might just do a better job than you and therefore expose you to your bosses. When was the last time you went on leave and did not worry about unfinished work left at the office? How much to do trust the competency levels of the people below you in your organization. How much of an investment have you put towards training, coaching, mentoring and developing your staff. Are you the type of person who takes longer to get well when you are off sick because every two minutes your phone is ringing and it is the office wanting all types of authorizations or confirmations?
Stop wishing if only your staff could be as efficient as you, spend quality time with each of your staff members, start by understanding who they are. I am not talking about their names or where they live, I am talking about their characters, what they like, what they don’t like, were their strengths lie and how far they will go, what sacrifices they will make for the business, you must understand that each person is unique and different so do not prescribe a one size fits all approach. Once you have gathered this intelligence, develop a coaching and mentoring program, delegate, encourage, and give a pat on the back. The one important fact is that you while you delegate responsibilities you must always remember that you will remain accountable for the actions of your staff. If anything goes wrong, accept it, take corrective action and stop the blame game, remember that when you take the option of blaming someone you are literally giving up the power to change and move forward. If your staff are calling you after hours, when you are at home and should be balancing your life by spending quality time with your family, it is your fault, if you go off on holiday and are forced to roam on your phone so that your office can get hold of you then you are really not on holiday you may as well call it a working holiday. Instead of enjoying the wonderful sound of your children’s laughter, you are just listening out for the next ring on your phone.
Trust me on your death bed you will not call your Secretary to quickly bring the report you were working on so that you may go over it again for the last time, at your death bed you will ask for your wife, husband, boyfriend, children or parents, the people that matter the most to you. Please Business owners, department heads and people in positions of authority, learn to delegate effectively so that you lower the pressure you are exerting on yourself and also your staff enjoy it when they are allowed to make decisions within the bounds of their authority. Seek assistance if you are not sure how to delegate, coach r mentor your staff and you will see how much you will begin to enjoy your time away from the office or from your work.
Please note that the Image workshop that was scheduled for 24th July 2009 was postponed to Saturday 8 August 2009, venue is our very own modern Image and Training Studio. Space is limited to the first 20 people who book as it is a highly practical workshop and requires that I pay individual attention to each participant. By the end of the workshop, your image both inward and outward will be transformed.
